Research notes

V&A sample woven in double cloth with a worsted warp and a woollen weft, 'a construction particular to this type of carpet'; warp in two series, wefts in two series combining blue, white, yellow, grey, green or red. Star-and-cross design. Later than the 1740s, but it is a museum-catalogued example of the Kidderminster/ingrain structure that began in 1735. The 1842 Encyclopaedia Britannica describes the same carpet as 'composed of two plies of cloth' with right and wrong sides, the colours reversed. A related V&A Dove & Co. sample (O258620, 1850s) is triple cloth.
