Research notes

Christie's lot note credits Ross with a mechanical punch hook in 1886 and the 1891 pattern catalog. Very likely the same Ebenezer Ross as US patent 463,548 (1891), the tool the Susan Burr copies. Confirm the patentee's residence (Toledo) on the patent itself. Confirmed by the patent scan: US463548 names Ebenezer Ross of Toledo, Ohio, improving his own 1881 patent US251381 (then of Wauseon, Ohio).
