Research notes

Checked against the USPTO document: H. Scholz, "Arrangement for the Tufting of Carpets", No. 3,968,758, patented July 13, 1976; filed Nov. 1, 1974; German priority Nov. 13, 1973 (2356585). The US counterpart of the patent behind the Hofmann hand-tufting gun (see co-hofmann-handtuft). What it is: a pneumatic hand gun. A hollow needle pierces the backing and the yarn is carried through it in an air stream; the air inlet sits behind the thread infeed, and one synchronous drive works both the cutter and the needle lift. This is the cut-pile, air-fed principle of today's professional guns. Lineage: it cites Schauer (US 3,142,276, 1964), Elliott et al. (US 3,144,844, 1964), Wilkes (US 3,225,723, 1965), Mueller (US 3,389,667, 1968) and Looper (US 3,430,590, 1969). Schauer, Elliott and Mueller are already in this database, so the German gun builds directly on the American hand-gun patents of the 1960s.
