Research notes

Knotted and cut wool pile (symmetrical knot), 896.6 × 325.1 cm. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, 1976. One of the series woven for the Louvre's Grande Galerie, nearly all between 1670 and 1689; Dupont's workshop made 32 and the Lourdet workshops 60, per Sotheby's. Featured in the Met exhibition 'A King's Carpet: Louis XIV and the Savonnerie' (8 Sept 2026 – 5 March 2028). Shows the hand-knotted luxury standard that loom-woven Wilton and Brussels were cheaper alternatives to.
