Research notes
Searched in Chinese, Japanese, German, French and Dutch (plus Hindi): every national record describes tufting as imported from America. No independent inventor turned up anywhere. A stronger claim than English sources alone can support. Citation check (Oct 2026, from search results; pages not opened): partly confirmed. As an absolute negative it can't be verified. One counter-example: Hong Kong sources credit Tai Ping's Anthony Yeh (葉元章) with inventing the tufting gun. HK articles say 1973年他發明了簇絨槍 and call it 全球首枝 ('the world's first'); one English source says the 'first electrical tufting gun' was patented in 1960. That is a claim to have invented the hand tool, not tufting itself, so 'no country claims an inventor' needs qualifying. The import-from-America accounts do hold for Japan (Suminoe imported a US machine in 1954) and are consistent for China (an equipment import is reported for 1980).
