Research notes
UNSUPPORTED. This record rested on a mistranslation. हस्तनिर्मित कालीन means HANDMADE carpet (which includes hand-tufted), not hand-knotted, so the figure says the whole handmade sector shrank as a share of the market, not that tufting overtook knotting. The quotation and the exporter Jabir Ansari were also not found. Amar Ujala (2025, 2026) reports that knotted carpets are now a token share of exports and hand-tufted and handloom goods dominate, but gives no 1990s split. When hand-tufting overtook hand-knotting in India is undated. Exporter Jabir Ansari, Bhadohi. The only construction-split figure found anywhere: hand-knotted is now ₹3,000 crore of a ₹17,000 crore market, against up to 80% in the 1990s; weaver out-migration began in 2000. Citation check (Oct 2026, from search results; pages not opened): source not found. Quote and Jabir Ansari attribution not found. MISTRANSLATION: 'हस्तनिर्मित कालीन' means HANDMADE carpet, not hand-knotted. In Indian trade usage 'handmade' includes hand-tufted, so the figure cannot support 'hand-tufting overtook hand-knotting'. The inferred 1995–2005 crossover date rests on this mistranslation. Related Amar Ujala reports (2025-10-09; 2026-09-05) say that knotted carpets are now a token share of exports and that hand-tufted/handloom goods dominate, but they give no 1990s figure.
