Research notes

REFUTED. Chinese sources do use these categories: a Sina post describes 中国装饰艺术风格的地毯 ("Chinese Art Deco–style carpets"), Zhihu ties 美术式 carpets to Art Deco, and Tianjin histories (including a Tianjin culture-bureau page) name Nichols as 倪克 (倪克地毯厂, founded by an American in 1923) with Fette as the two largest US firms. The brief's point that Chinese sources tell the period mainly as industrial and labour history may still hold; the absolute claim does not. Searched specifically: zero Chinese-language sources use those categories. They are Anglophone collector-market inventions. Chinese sources tell the period as industrial and labour history: factory counts, export tonnage, named merchants. Citation check (Oct 2026, from search results; pages not opened): contradicted. Some Chinese-language sources do use the category. A Sina post says the style 受当时欧洲的Art Deco风格的影响…形成了中国装饰艺术风格的地毯 (formed a Chinese Art Deco–style carpet). A Zhihu article ties 美术式 carpets to art deco. Chinese Tianjin histories name Nichols as 倪克 (倪克地毯厂, said to be founded by the American 倪克 in 民国十二年/1923) alongside 美古绅 (Karagheusian) and 海京. They also say Nichols and Fette were the two largest US carpet houses, whose rugs bore 'Handwoven in China by Nichols' stamps. It is fair that mainstream Chinese histories classify the period's designs as 美术式 / 彩花式 / 北京式 / 素凸式 rather than 'Art Deco', but 'zero Chinese sources' is false.
