Research notes

Besides Trueblood (event-trueblood-robotic-tufting-2022), the search found a handful of open experiments but no open-source tufting-CNC repository. (1) OpenBuilds forum, January 2022: a builder proposes putting a tufting gun on a CoreXY 3D-printer-style gantry and asks how to keep the gun facing its direction of travel. This rotation problem is the same one Wilcom solved with a rotating needle. (2) A diploma project at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, 'Tufting – parametric design & robot fabrication', rebuilt a hand tufting gun, fixed it to a 6-axis industrial robot to tuft 3D surfaces on 3D objects for upholstery and acoustic panels, and found contact pressure, speed and orientation the hard parts. Its year was not visible. (3) A 2026 Fabricademy (Textile Academy) assignment motorised a punch needle with a servo and 3D-printed gear. No KUKA or ABB industrial tufting projects or peer-reviewed papers were found.
