Research notes
Founded in 1883 in Barmen as a carpet and upholstery-fabric maker (the same group later made the Kobold vacuum, 1929). The Hameln carpet mill was founded separately in 1889 by Otto Kuhlmann, sold to the Preis family in 1934 and bought by Vorwerk in 1986; designer carpets from the 1980s. A company interview names weaving and tufting among its production techniques. The carpet business now operates as Hamelner Teppichwerke after a management buyout. Why it matters: Germany's best-known branded carpet maker; useful for dating tufting in West Germany, but that date is still missing. Dates: 1883 confirmed; Wuppertal-to-Hannover move 1950 per one interview; when Vorwerk began tufting not found.
