Research notes
Interior Design (11 Jul 2017) reported that Carpet Sign had just acquired a 3-D tufting robot able to vary pile height continuously, without stopping, and had Karim Rashid design a collection to show it off. The result was 'Lush' (Chaplins calls it '3D Lush'): 12 designs in loop and cut pile in New Zealand wool. In April 2019 Dezeen described Carpet Sign as a manufacturer making rugs on robotic tufting machines in Asten. It reported the Freedom collection of nine rugs by Dutch designers, art-directed by Richard Hutten to show 'the extreme possibilities of robot-assisted rug production', which premiered at Milan design week 2019. Pieces included Jólan van der Wiel's Tropical Tapestry and Hutten's Rainbow Mountains. Why it matters: well-known designers were showing European design rugs made by tufting robots from 2017. The robot's maker is not named.
